Optimator™ FAQs

Optimator™ is a family of patented devices designed to reduce the aerodynamic drag of tractor/semi combination unit trucks, straight trucks and local delivery box trucks and cargo vans.

For what kind of trucks will Optimator™ technology help improve fuel efficiency?

Optimator™ can improve fuel efficiency for box trucks, cube vans and cargo trailers with roll-up or swing-open access cargo doors.

What makes Optimator™ special?

Unlike many other technologies Optimator™ was designed from the ground up to work with all trailers including those with roll-up doors, built-in loading platforms and power lift-gates. Many other alternative solutions mount directly to rear swing-out doors.  Those kinds of solutions are not compatible with either roll-up door applications or with applications where the rear doors do not span the full width of the trailer box body.  Typically these solutions are also not compatible with functioning as the leading trailer of a tandem trailer pair since the streamlining devices are too deep to deploy and operate in the gap between the tandem trailers.

How does Optimator™ support tandem fleet applications as well as lift gate and roll-up door applications?

The Optimator family of patents do not interfere with the rear of a truck when in the retracted position for loading and unloading. The Optimator™ airfoils are designed so that the placement of the airfoils allow for deployment in the leading trailer of a tandem trailer pair to cover the inter-gap opening and to streamline the airflow behind the front trailer and optimize the inter-trailer gap in a tandem trailer configuration, while the identical Optimator™ airfoil set in the rear trailer of a tandem configuration is positioned to optimize the airflow on the trailing edge of the following trailer in a tandem operation.  Optimator™ equipped trailers in a tandem configuration are identical and Optimator equipped trailers can readily be swapped in the field between front trailer and rear trailer positions.

What sort of fuel economy can I expect?

The Optimator™ technology is protected by a family of patents for drag-reducing truck and trailer devices anticipated to improve fuel economy for cargo-hauling trailers by as much as 5-7% or even more.

In what materials, styling, colors and specific implementations are Optimator™ products available?

Optimator™ was designed to allow for individual customization by each manufacturer based upon your own needs. Licensing is available with an extremely low initial sign-up fee with no minimum volume requirements and a very reasonable per-unit royalty. Every Optimator™ licensee is granted usage rights to the complete Optimator™ patent portfolio as part of their license agreements. The Optimator™ patents cover a broad range of implementations – both manual and automated, for multiple design configurations, and for a limitless range of design materials.  You can even tailor your implementations to meet your overall product styling needs.

How is the Optimator™ licensing fee structured?

Initial license fees are available on a range of fee schedules best suited to your business size and marketing expectations. Licensing options begin with a very nominal initial license fee and an associated royalty schedule that is based upon a small percentage of the projected one-year fuel economy savings from deploying Optimator™ patent-based products on your trailers and truck bodies. The basic initial package includes 5 development licenses for making test and development units and a basic license fee schedule up through several higher (but still very reasonable) options for a higher initial license fee covering additional test and development units and lower per unit license fee for production unit sales. After the initial license fee, royalty payments only apply when units have been sold, leased or rented. All licenses include access to the full package of Optimator™ patents with no minimum commitment for ongoing production quantities. Once testing is complete and you begin marketing, you can convert each development license into a production license covering your license fee for an initial sold unit.

How has the Optimator™ licensing fee been designed to be business friendly for product design, prototyping and test marketing without any increased fixed costs or long term risk to your business?

The Optimator™ licensing fees are charged per vehicle – so you always know that the royalty fee is a very low fixed per-vehicle application cost to you. The royalty fee is based upon a small percentage of one year’s expected fuel savings and the fee varies on the truck application with an even lower royalty fee for smaller truck configurations where the typical fuel savings benefits from aerodynamic streamlining will be lower than for larger over the road tractor-trailer applications.

Having a low fixed per unit royalty fee per truck application allows you to calculate all your costs in your business planning and pricing models, and gives you the opportunity to maximize your per unit sales. Having no minimum royalty volumes allows you to avoid any increased fixed overhead costs as you develop your own Optimator™ customized implementations. Your business can comfortably grow your own Optimator™ products at any pace desired knowing your royalty rate structure is set without the pressure to build sales volumes and without incurring any new built-in fixed overhead for your business. Optimator™ plays to your strengths – you finalize the design and manufacturing for your implementation and you control the costs and sales price of your own manufactured implementations. Your only cost to start is a small initial license fee which as an additional bonus you later partly recover through converting development licenses into production license credits offsetting some of your initial license fee payment. After your initial license fee, your additional obligations to Optimator are just the license fees paid on each additional unit sold once you begin to market your Optimator™ implementations. What are some of the special competitive benefits of every Optimator™ licensing program?

The Optimator™ license fees are tied individually to an estimated (and low percentage) of the expected fuel economy saving for one year's usage to be gained from the use of a licensed Optimator™ product separately set for each class of vehicle.  This is designed to provide you as a licensee a low license cost for each unit manufactured and sold by you.  We have structured the fees so that the already low license fee you pay for an Optimator™ aerodynamic streamlining set for a semi-tractor trailer rig where greater fuel saving benefits will accrue to your customer will be even lower when you offer products targeted to straight truck or other applications where the fuel savings benefits will tend to be lower for your customer.  In those cases we expect that to help maintain an attractive value proposition for your products both your manufacturing costs and the cost for an Optimator™ license need to be less so that you can still provide a value proposition for your customers and yet make a good profit on the sale or lease of each unit to that target market.  The production costs should naturally be less as the vehicles themselves are smaller, and our contribution to reducing costs is to have special and even lower license fees for applications where the expected annual fuel savings benefit from the Optimator™ product will also be reduced. Our license fee structures are linked to a conservative nominal fuel savings target separately for each class of vehicle to help make this attractive to our licensees.

What are the manufacturing costs for Optimator™?

Manufacturing costs and production itself is the responsibility of the licensee, giving the each licensee the greatest flexibility in materials, configurations, decisions as to whether manual or automatic operation is desired, colors, and other factors, while also eliminating any need for a built-in markup on purchasing a finished Optimator™ product from another vendor.

How many patents are in the Optimator™ patent portfolio?

The Optimator™ portfolio of patents includes eight patents. When you get an Optimator™ license you are licensing all the patents for your use for the same low fee. This allows you the greatest flexibility in customizing your Optimator™ implementation to best suit your needs. Patents* presently included are: 7,641,262; 8,033,594; 8,136,868; 8,235,456; 8,579,357; 8,696,047; 8,911,000 and 9,162,716. *Additional Optimator™ patent(s) may be pending from time to time. When granted, these patents would be incorporated in the basic licensed patent portfolio for all existing licensees without any change in license fees.
